The domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region

By the 1800's Europe had gained a lot of power. The Industrial Revolution had greatly enriched the European economics. This made the Europeans more aggressive. Because of this, Europeans brought most of the world under their influence and control. But the Europeans power caused a lot of trouble.

Political: Merchant ships and naval vessels needed bases around the world. Western leaders were completely motivated by the nationalism.
Economic: Manufacturers wanted access to natural resources. The manufacturers also hoped for new markets for factory goods. The colonies offered a valuable outlet for Europe's growing population.
Humanitarian and Religious Goals: Many westerners felt concern for their "little brothers" overseas. Doctors, colonial officials, and missionaries believed they had a duty to spread western civilization.
Within a few decades, imperialist nations gained control over much of the world. They succeeded because:
1. European nations were growing stronger. While this was happening, several older civilizations were in decline.
2. Europeans also had the advantage of strong economies, well- organized governments, and powerful armies and navies.
3. Europeans had superior technology and medical knowledge.
